Review of Sugar (2010) by Lake M — 29 Jun 2009
I really like this movie...a big step up from the guy who directed "Do you Know this man.".
This film shows how hard it is to get to the majors from the Dominican, and once here, how hard it is for players to adjust to the culture...from Florida, a place filled with Spanish speakers, to Iowa, we see how hard it is to bridge the gap, and how it takes away the love of the game for him.
Then, how he finds peace in New York after leaving baseball, he finds it isn't baseball that he lost passion in, but feeling left out and alone in an alien world. He finally finds peace again, surrounded by old Latin ball players who no longer play in the majors.
Not really a story about baseball, but a story about isolation and culture gaps using baseball as the catalyst for the story.
Great directing, acting, and a good story overall.
