Review of Sugar (2010) by Elton L — 12 Dec 2009
This film is written and directed by the same couple who gave us, Half Nelson, which happened to be my favorite movie of 2006. Sugar is easily my favorite film of 2009. What starts off as a coming-of-age, rags-to-riches, sports genre flick, turns into a serious social commentary on the American Dream, perhaps one of the most astute I've seen in years.
I'm really kicking myself that I didn't see this in the theater. Boden and Fleck are now up there with this new generation of great directors like Thomas McCarthy, Fernando Mierelles (sp.?), Darren Aronofsky, Alfonso Cuaron, etc.
Also, Sugar kind of made me invested in baseball for the two hours that I watched the film, which is saying a lot.
