Review of Sugar (2008) by Markellus R — 04 Sep 2009
This isn't great. Often, the filmmaking can be awkward and cliched (especially by the end). Also, the characterization of Azucar could be a bit more complicated. In too many moments, he comes across as a "movie version" of an immigrant rather than an actual complex person.
That said, a lot of the film works and when it does it is more sensitive and careful than most of what passes for American indie films.
