Review of Sugar (2008) by Jeremy P — 06 Sep 2009
A strong follow-up from the team behind 'Half Nelson'. Sugar is the story of a young dominican pitcher whom comes to the states to pursue his dream of playing in the major leagues. This is a coming of age story of sorts, and I really liked how the material was covered.
There is no emotional manipulation in this film, for the most part, and it just feels very real and naturalistic. The camerawork and direction definetly have a part in this, as well as the highly improvised dialogue, but its just how the story is told.
Its a strong character study all around, though I wish Sugar's big decision later in the film was a little stronger motivated.
