Review of Sugar (2008) by Ali B — 01 Nov 2009
Wonderful film about a young baseball player from the Dominican Republic who dreams of making it out of his poverty stricken life and into the big leagues. Don't expect a rags-to-riches story here, though.
The writing/directing duo of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (who last made the promising debut Half Nelson) are way too intelligent to fall prey to any contrivances or to cater to audience expectations. They've crafted a rich, layered picture about immigration and the 'American Dream', thoroughly researched and completely authentic.
I can't wait to see what they do next. One of the best films of the year.
