Review of Suffragette (2015) by Ian G — 13 Nov 2015
A decent if uninspired take on the suffragette movement in Britain that focuses on the period of it transitioning from a peaceful protest to pulling off acts of violence in order to get the message out and the right to vote pushed to the front of the agenda against British Parliament.
Strong brits Mulligan and Carter are at the fore and deliver decent performances both, if somewhat stock, and Meryl Streep of course sweeps down for the motivational speech to the troops (and I am sure to secure extra financing for the project as well but that is neither here nor there), the film is decent in hitting all the marks leading up to the movement going global if the storyline is tracked all the way through, with this being the start.
Might have been an even stronger mark if we actually started the story and stayed with the suffragette member who ended up being the sacrificial lamb who finally got the movement the attention it deserved rather than the normal familar star characters for a bigger impact.
Otherwise, is ok for what it is but could have been more.
