Review of Suddenly, Last Summer (2013) by Elise S — 05 Oct 2010
A suspenseful story built around the mysterious death of a young man called Sebastian. One summer he's on holiday with his cousin Catherine. On this trip he dies and the way he dies is so shocking, that Catherine doesn't remember a thing about it.
She ends up in a mental hospital and a couple of months later, her aunt, Mrs. Venable, calls on Dr. Cuckrowicz, a very good brian surgion. She wants Catherine to have a lobotomy done by him in order to prevent her from saying any more shocking things about what happened that summer to Sebastian.
Dr. Cuckrowicz doesn't want to do this, because he doesn't feel she's helpless enough to need a lobotomy. Instead he tries to find out what happened the day Sebastian died.Suddenly, Last Summer is one of the best adaptions of a Tennessee Williams play that I've ever seen.
The story is very dark and suspenseful and deals with a lot of heavy subjects under it's surface, like Sebastian's sexuality and his obsessive bond with his mother, a role, wonderful as always, played by Katharine Hepburn.
Elizabeth Taylor gives away the best performance of the whole cast, starring as Catherine.
