Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by C H — 28 Mar 2013
This is the first lengthy review I felt compelled to write because I usually enjoy this type of movie, however this time I was not entertained. First off this movie should have been called "Geek Movie Cliches", because it seemed like everything you read about a movie being bad from fan-boys was all put into this one movie. Homage in movies is and can be a great thing, most people who make movies do so because they grew up watching them, but on the whole this movie felt like I was sitting in one of those tacky "Epic" "Date""Superhero" kind of parody movies where they just try to cram every kind of geek reference into one mess of a movie. When I hear other hardcore nerds say that they could make a better movie than the one they are criticizing, this is the exact movie I would expect them to make.
The characters, who were all made to look like they were all some kind of manga heroines, were lifted from Girl, Interrupted and put into the story of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, so nothing new on character development or story. Each fantasy sequence looked like what a child would describe about the respective movies they paid homage too, although it was nice to see that the orcs from Lord of the Rings, and the NS-5 robots from I,Robot can get more work. I guess when Zack Snyder tries to be original he fails at it, because I really enjoyed Watchmen, 300, and yes even the animated Owls of Ga'Hoole, so he does well on putting other people's work on film.
Even Scott Glenn, who is a great actor, looked like he was phoning it in with a part that was probably written with the late David Carradine more in mind. I'm sure alot of people have and will enjoy this film but I was bored the whole time. Come on Zach lets try to be somewhat original next time, because it can be done. To sum up I gave it 2 stars, one for the Zach Snyder digital effects look, which is enjoyable, and one star for hot ladies in skimpy outfits, it may not have made the movie any better but it sure didn't hurt either.
Will I buy it on Blu-ray?
My answer is a firm NO.
