Review of Sucker Punch (2011) by Scott G — 25 Jul 2018
A much-misunderstood film; accused of being a film that's all style and no substance, it is in fact a commentary about films that are all style and no substance. It's also about the struggle between studios and visionaries (with the one trying to sneak a clever movie past the other); about how the popular form of titillation in Hollywood is any degree of violence, but no sex please we're American; about how women are treated by filmmakers and fan culture; about coping mechanisms and it's about the power of story-telling and our imagination in general.
This is all wrapped up in a nicely layered sequence of imaginings; Snyder showing his trademark flair for action let loose in a wild mix of fantasy ingredients; a girl's empowerment musical and a psychological thriller.
