Review of Suburbicon (2017) by Brenda M — 04 Nov 2017
This movie was indeed a dark comedy with many different messages on many levels. The questions put prejudice and irrational hate on trial and explored the great unspoken taboo of "white privilege". I think the film comes at just the right time when so many baby boomers opine about a return to that gilded age of the 50's when social consciousness was shrink wrapped into little segregate bungalos with shutters closed to hide the ugly truth of how the other side lived. The voice of children in the film spoke the loudest, as they were the real victims of the ignorance fear of the "other" perpetuated by the adults in the film. The black characters were in the background as were their irrate neighbors, and that's just the way it should be. The voice of the children in the film who in the end found a way to tear down the fences built around them to keep them apart is all we needed to hear.
I enjoyed the movie. Clooney did a good job of making a heavy-duty topic into a whimsical farce.
