Review of Suburbicon (2017) by Carolina R — 17 Nov 2018
I found this movie compelling and clever. It contains the claustrophobia of suburban life perfectly (in the era of the 50ï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s and I think the fact remains today). The film leaves us on the edge of the seat wondering who is the most evil, who is the real actor in the evil, and who will come apart first, and who will triumph. Sounds like a suburbun party right?
But seriously, the racism plot next door is horrifying in that it is open-faced and the rhetoric used in the town meeting is once again crowning in American politics today. So this makes it all the more relevsnt as a viewer, as you wait wincing until the movie racism boils over. Racism is nothing short of terrorism dressed as civility. And that wears off when faves with any kind is test. In this case the test of patience and strength so they begin to throw Molotov cocktails into the car and windows of the visiting unwelcome other-race family.
I give it 4 not 5 only because itï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s a tad meandering, thebblack famiky except for the boy has little voice, and the film shows away from greatness and true self belief. It kind is has to pick a tram.m and decide what it wants to be when it grows up. But it is well worth the 105 minutes and is a masterpiece in many moments, certainly much much better than most things out there with higher scores.
