Review of Submarine (2011) by Kevin K — 27 Feb 2012
When a film captures the mind of an adolescent on screen, it can go one of two ways. We either see your classic coming of age story, riddled with rites of passage that are very familiar and comforting in their simplicity (DON'T be a jerk just to be cool John Travolta in Grease, for the love of Pete), OR we have our plucky protagonist, Oliver Tate. Destined to be an individual. With flaws. Oh, yes, with flaws. But we can relate. And IN that, in remembering that awkward, yet magical age where searching for adventure was just as important as anything else, we find a new hero:
Oliver Tate, occupation: Human.
