Review of Submarine (2011) by Asif K — 22 Aug 2011
Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate has two big ambitions: to save his parents' marriage via carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday. Worried that his mom is having an affair with New Age weirdo Graham, Oliver monitors his parents' sex life by charting the dimmer switch in their bedroom. He also forges suggestive love letters from his mom to dad. Meanwhile, Oliver attempts to woo his classmate, Jordana, a self-professed pyromaniac who supervises his journal writing - especially the bits about her. When necessary, she orders him to cross things out.
Starring Craig Roberts, Sally Hawkins, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Yasmin Paige , Darren Evans.
Directed by Richard Ayoade, its his debut and it might be this year's best.
Ok so what should I call this movie ok maybe a Dramedy. I was looking forward to this movie because I was quite impressed and fascinated by both trailer and the reviews it got. anyways lucky enough, I caught it yesterday and I really liked this movie. though for me it was a bit forgettable but I had a good time and quite appreciable work by the writers and the director.
I really appreciated the work of this director that brought this unique movie to us. his approach is very realistic and at the same time subtle and quite a visual and creative charm that always attracts me. really good direction. written very good too. though screenplay has a bit weak points. good music and score and also good cinematography and art direction.
Talking about performances, the parents are played by one of my favorite British actress Sally Hawkins and Noah Taylor. they both portrays the parents so well. really good performances. Craig Roberts did an awsome job. Paddy Considine as a laughable psychotic character was good too.
This movie has very awkward moments and the whole tone of the movie is like this which really makes it unique and also the characters aren't much likable too. most of the humor will get over your head. he has a Wes Anderson charm all over him according to me. I loved this coming of age tale and so will you. and I liked who depth those teenage stuff has in this movie I mean you might see yourself in those situations or you might already have, which will make it less weird. do watch.
