Review of Submarine (2011) by Deanomite — 31 Dec 2019
Brilliant in moments, a young guy tries to impact those in his life having a kind of fabricated empathy, like a person at his age would have. Empathy is about trial and error, he hits a bullseye with a sweet poem to his girlfriend after creeping her out.
As a character, the protagonist seems to have no feelings whatsoever, apparently due to parents that likewise have no passion in life. His dad is a marine biologist who 'just drifted into it.' They have an aquarium with no fish, and when his mom gets enchanted by a cult leader simply because this is the first guy with an idea, it's more affecting than it at first appears.
