The common criticism against Richard Ayoade's directorial debut is that its treading into "Wes Anderson territory". And while Submarine does share similar themes with some of Anderson's films (mainly Rushmore and Moonrise Kingdom) it definitely has its own sense of style and humor that sets it apart.

Namely the narration by the protagonist Oliver Tate, played hilariously by Craig Roberts. The film focuses on not only Oliver's romance with Jordana Bevan (played by Yasmin Page) but also Oliver's quest to repair his parents crumbling marriage.

Although the films second half is not nearly as strong as the first, I would still wholeheartedly recommend Submarine to anybody who enjoys independent films, coming of age stories, and/or sharp comedic writing.
