Review of Struck by Lightning (2013) by Aaron P — 11 Oct 2012

I saw this movie last night at the SLGFF. I have to admit I was pretty impressed for the most part. I went in with low expectations especially after I heard that it wasn't so good from a friend. But there were a lot of great one liners and lots of stars in this little indie.

Chris did a great job with the script for the most part. Not sure how plausible it is given there was no reason for the gay theatre student to not fight back over the blackmail or that a major college would accept a literary magazine over newspaper article especially the circumstances with which it was created or the quality. Plus, although the lightning boy reference is funny at the beginning, it makes no sense at the end when all of the kids he has blackmailed clearly know who he is.

Great performance by Allison Janney as always. She is so under appreciated/rated. Christina Hendricks is great too. She is definitely not playing Joan from Ma Men. It was nice to see Dermot Mulroney again proving that he can act(playing a a straight man). Unfortunately, I thought Chris Colfer was basically playing a toned down Kurt from Glee. Although his character had no sexual identity issues he sounded and carried himself like a butched up version of Kurt. That's not a bad thing unless that is the only character he can play. Rebel Wilson was funny as always. She has been on fire since Bridesmaids. Nice nod to her character from that movie, although if she keeps that up it will be a very limited acting ability.

All in all this was a good movie. If I was just voting on this movie in comparison to just gay films I would give it 4 stars but since I am comparing it to all genres it gets a solid 3 stars just bordering on 3 1/2 stars.

Lots of funny one liners! A little slow at times which can be blamed on the pacing from the editing and/or direction. Very nice to see so many familiar faces as well as a couple of new ones.
