Review of Struck by Lightning (2013) by Andrea D — 22 Nov 2013
A decent debutant movie for Glee's Chris Colfer. While the movie offers a feel-good theme, the character development and storyline needs more tackling and expansion, like a lot. I do like the idea of the film: smart kid dreaming to leave his isolated small town as soon as possible. In order to do so, he needs to make a literary magazine to be accepted to his dream university. Because of his obnoxious persona, he has no writers. He then blackmailed all of the 'popular' kids in his school, with his and her own dirty secrets, and made them write for the magazine. But before he had the chance to leave for college, he got struck by lightning and died.
See, that is all I can come up for a summary for this movie. I like the idea about how the main character tries hard to change his fellow peers' perception about their surrounding petty world; but while embracing that idea, the movie also add additional storyline that is not necessary and lost its track. In fact, Struck by Lightning feels like a memoir unfinished by Chris Colfer.
Chris has a bright future ahead of him and will definitely watch his future projects. But, for now, he needs to sharpen his story-telling skill first.
6/10.
