This is one of the ugliest yet most beautiful films I've seen. Aestheticaly the film is just dirty, the characters are gross looking, the sets look filthy and the film just looks to wallow in misery.
Yet the characters are so real, especially Bruno who is alternately depressing and hilarious. This is the best thing I've seen from Herzog so far.
