Review of Streets of Fire (1984) by Andre B — 28 Oct 2008
It's funny, this movie made such an impact on me years ago. Fast cars, tough guys, rock chicks, undeniably catchy music--this movie had it all...until I saw it again recently. Michael Paré is sadly mediocre as Tom Cody, the ex-boyfriend of rockstar Ellen Aim (Diane Lane).
He's recruited by his older sister and Ellen's current boyfriend/manager (Rick Moranis) to save her from a vicious motorcycle gang led by a sublimely creepy Willem Dafoe in crazy leather overalls.
The entire thing seems like a gaggle of unused ideas left over from director Walter Hill's earlier classic, The Warriors, but there's enough life coming from the supporting cast and songs (written by Jim Steinman, Stevie Nicks and Dan Hartman among others) that carries it along 'til the end.
Watch for early appearances from Robert Townsend and Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump) as part of a doo-wop group that gets swept up in the action. It's not quite the bastion of awesomeness I remember, but it's still a lot of fun.
