Review of Street Fighter (1994) by Jesse M — 09 Apr 2015
What a gargantuan mess. For a movie that is called Street Fighter, it sure didn't live up to the title considering there were nary any hand to hand combat scenes to speak of... This adaptation of the hit video game is chock full of the same colorful nuts that are so prevalent in the game, but for the most part they had very little to do in the film.
Van Damme was utterly miscast as the true American hero. His accent sounds like Brussels sprouts and his acting tasted just as bad too. Raul Julia does his best to ham it up... best I can say for his last go round RIP. The rest of the cast were mere action figures, and I swear a good portion of them were dubbed so bad that they sound like a bunch of Stephen Hawkings delivering their lines.
Speaking of lines, wow was this script ill conceived. The horrible dialogue and the one liners failed to generate any desire to care for the characters who were also written as thin as the paper it was printed on. The plot didn't serve the appeal of the game at all. Everyone were either soldiers or bad guys... and the action was pretty much war violence.... in a movie.... based on a video game... about STREET FIGHTING!!! How do you manage to get that one crucial element completely wrong? Overall the characters were very poorly handled, and did not do their game counterparts any justice. Oh right, the plot? What plot?
This movie is a train wreck of E. Honda proportions.... I only give it two stars, because it does have a so bad it's amusing quality to it... Otherwise this turkey should have been K.O.'d and served as the main course for Thanksgiving instead of being released onto the world on Christmas in 1994.
