Review of Street Fighter (1994) by Gabbo P — 29 Jun 2014
Street Fighter II (the video game) is a great game that put fighting games on the map, Street Fighter (the movie) is a pile of rubbish that is the cinematic equivalent of being annihilated by M. Bison in the video game, what should have been a straightforward 90 minute Martial Arts tournament flick (in the same vein as Mortal Kombat and Enter the Dragon) ends up being more similar to a bad episode of G.
I. Joe with its military-esque plot that bears no kind of resemblance to the video game, the film tries to be both a legitimate Action flick, and a parody of one, but writer/director Steven E. de Souza fails to find the right balance (it's especially mind-boggling when you take in mind that this is the same man who wrote the Action classic Die Hard), most of the cast don't resemble the game characters very well, and the characters themselves have been changed around, I also didn't like the idea of Guile (played by Jean-Claude Van Damme) being the main focus when the games focused mainly on Ryu, and for a movie called Street Fighter, there's barely any street fighting going on, and when they do get to it, the fight scenes are rushed and poorly executed, the saving grace of the film is Raul Julia (R.
I.P.) as Bison, and even he's miscast (Bison is supposed to be built like a tank).
