Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Adrian M — 16 Apr 2008
Anyone that knows me knows that I am a Pekinpah fanatic and Straw Dogs is my second favorite Pekinpah film. It was origianlly banned in Britain from 1984 to 2002 due to its graphic portrayal of violence and for what has to be one of the most disturbing rape scenes in film history, disturbing, not because of its graphic nature but because of the tonal shift that occurs mid rape.
Aside from the violence, which is unsettling even for today's standards, the thing that is most disturbing is the unflinching look at the primal nature of man and woman for that matter.
Pekinpah has always questioned the morality of man while delving deep into his darkness and letting us come to our own conclusions about what has taken place and where it will eventually lead, long after the film has ended.
