Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Elisa K — 13 Oct 2008
Masterfully made thriller which examines the human predispostion to violence.
The film starts off with an upbeat tone, you are introduced to a happy-go-lucky young couple played by Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, but from the moment Hoffman enters the small rural bar and has been introduced to the villagers, a sense of forboding arises the chips away at the tone and events culminate to the point that this becomes one of the most nihilistic films you may ever see. Watching the film is like sitting out in your backgarden on a deck chair with full knowledge that a storm is about to blow in.
The acting is superb, Hoffman plays the meak intellectual with a hidden ferocity fantastically and Susan George gives such a performance that you wonder why she didn't turn up in more movies.
A cult classic.
