Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Eddie D — 21 Apr 2011
Peckinpah does a great job in capturing a mood, environment and people in this ugly little film. It's surprisingly revealing in its dissection of a troubled marriage and it doesn't shy away from uncomfortably complex sexuality.
The uncut version was initially rated X and Peckinpah's disdain of women, men and communities is evident. Still, underneath its brutal nature, lies a relevant truth and important social commentary.
In some respects the ideas are brave and the editing is way ahead of its time. It borderlines on impressionistic.
