Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Mark C — 29 Jun 2008
The most unnerving and horrible thing I have ever seen. The first half watches like Wicker Man; the second half watches like Home Alone on a bad trip. The rape sequence is one of the most disturbing scenes I've ever forced myself to sit through; the plot has you screaming for everything to be unmasked, the truth to be brought out.
Great foreshadowing, and the tension is so heavy that the two hours you devote to this movie seem like four. That feeling of timelessness with which you watch is actually your soul suffocating under the implications of this film. Peckinpah literally has to ask the viewer at the end, "you okay?".
You aren't.
This movie is the very definition of a "cinematic experience"; one that you will never want to experience again.
