Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Sean D — 18 Apr 2012
Straw Dogs is very provocative and it doesn't have to be gory to feel shockingly grisly.
Straw Dogs is mainly about a couple who has to survive five men who is terrorizing them, but not this couple, they messed with the wrong couple. The story is simple, but as the film progresses into a ruthless and very intense atmosphere and character.
The film starts a bit slow, but I liked it, Director Sam Penkinpah made the first half character driven, and David character becoming a different person. Second half just becomes a horrific shocking thrill ride, especially near the ending.
Dustin Hoffmin who plays David, (I have never seen him in a thriller such as this) makes a believable intelligent, mad, and ruthless character.
Susan George who plays Amy also does an excellent job, and just love her last scene performance.
For gore hounds there isn't; however, its a freshness in those days, and considering its time, but those scenes were pretty intense and shocking.
Overall Director Sam Peckinpah Straw Dogs really captures the psychological mad nature and its intensely provocative, original, and Dustin Hofffmin and Susan George performance were outstanding.
Straw Dog in 1971 was a shocking film and still is a shocking film.
