Review of Strangers on a Train (1951) by Quinn O — 09 Apr 2010
What a delight! Hitchcock shines in this very early psychological thriller from 1951, about two men who meet casually on a train and cause a snowball effect of murderous intentions and furious stalking - as well as a particularly delightful crazed merry-go-round.
Really, this is just a classic. The characters are good, the story is simple but gripping and Hitchcock manages to craft suspense and terror from things like picking up a cigarette lighter, or playing tennis.
This movie is a slow burner, but it really uses its time well, effectively setting up strange situation after strange situation. This is kind of the prelude to the host of psychological thriller movies that would come out in later years, and it does well in setting the bar high.
Highly recommended.
