Extremely clever plotting is what ultimately saves "Strangers on a Train" from being another routine thriller. While it isn't entirely unpredictable, it strays as far from the old, tired clichés of the genre and tries to be something more original and unexpected, which goes a long way in making it as involving as it is.

Hitchcock directs with as much expertise as you'd expect and the performances are all perfectly serviceable, especially the one from Robert Walker, which is maniacal and unsettling and scarily good.
