Review of Strangers on a Train (1951) by Rian P — 01 Apr 2013
Absolutely love this film, it's probably my favourite Hitchcock, but the last act... is so silly -- and I do mean everything in it! The 2 lead characters' and also the policemen motivations for starters; the macguffin with the cigarette lighter is so infuriating (it wouldn't count as evidence; it's hearsay!); and the police: ''No, let him play his game of tennis first before we arrest him.
... oh, he gave us the slip?Let him go free onto that train; this could lead to something big.'' Like what exactly? Or when Bruno drops and retrieves the lighter from the gutter, and becomes elastic man? Or how about the actions of that old man who goes under the out of control ferris wheel to switch it off (risked his life in real life too) -- I mean, he could of just walked around to the other side, right?! That entire last act (even if it's all enthralling stuff, hehe) is probably the only thing wrong with an otherwise flawless film.
