Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Tibor B — 27 Jun 2008
Dry, minimalist film from Jarmusch, one of the main figures in 80s US indie filmmaking. Jarmusch succeeds in making the strange trio of characters very likeable despite the absence of much plot, and only dry, laconic dialogue.
The stark b&w photography mirrors the empty and lonely existence that the characters try to run away from to the perceived utopia of Florida. It won't be to everyone's taste but fans of the French New Wave or European filmmakers such as Aki Kaurismaki should find a lot to enjoy.
