Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Caleb M — 21 Oct 2008
I was extremly suprised at how much I fell in love with this film. At first I was a bit pu-off by the single take shots followed by black, but I become obsorbed in the characters and their journey and fell into the rhythm of the film. It seemed to me these characters look for something new and exciting in America, but "You know, it's funny... you come to someplace new, an'... and everything looks just the same.".
John Lurie is decent as Willie, and Richard Edson is always entertaining and it's cool to see his darting eyes and uncomfortable smile in his first role, but my favorite character is Eszter Balint as Eva. I can't even find the words to describe how much I loved her in this role. She has beauty, rhythm, energy and attitude that make her character feel flawed and real while at the same time being impossibly wonderfull.
