Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Dave R — 04 May 2009
A rather bleak offering, not that that is surprising in a Jarmusch film, Stranger Than Paradise is a slow paced meandering film that seems to have little or no direction or change. It is a throwback to more existential works and absurdist works such as Waiting For Godot.
The characters simply pass the time, waiting it seems for something, though they know not what. The acting is dry but in many ways more true to life than average fare. I particularly liked the scene at the movies where the characters sat in silence, more pacified than actually entertained by the experience.
