Review of Stranger by the Lake (2013) by Allison F — 05 Apr 2014
This was the worst film I have seen for a long, long time. I have read reviews about its and words used, atmospheric, intoxicating and many other artistic word to describe the film are beyond me.
The plot was basic. People, usually Frank, drive to the lake, park their car. Walk to the lake, meet someone and go off and have sex with them. Next day people, usually Frank drive to the lake, park their car. Walk to the lake, meet someone and go off and have sex with them. This was a continued theme for the rest of the film. The pathetic effort of trying to inject a bit of comedy into the film with the character who was wanking off while watching people have sex or trying to pick Frank up was, well the least funny part of the film. The most ridiculous part of the film was Frank falling in love with someone he had seen murder someone else in the lake by drowning them. So what does Frank do, he has sex (yawn) with him. Not only does he have sex with some he has seen murder someone by drowning them, he goes swimming in the lake with him. Totally unbelievable even in the most artistically licensed film.
The sub plot of Frank making friends with the only straight guy in the film was the only interesting part and I guessed very quickly was going to happen to him. The person playing the police detective was the funniest part I have seen in ages. But I don't think it was supposed to be a humorous part.
I was glad when Henri I think his name was murdered the detective, worst piece of acting ever. As I knew the end of the film was coming.
However artistic, intriguing, intoxicating reviews say the film is. It was nothing short of a basic porn film. If you want to see a great gay themed film with a story, bit of comedy, emotional ending and totally believable. I recommend Weekend.
