Review of Strange Days (1995) by Leah C — 02 Jun 2009
Cyberpunk; pure and uncut, straight from the cerebral cortex.
This movie goes where almost no others have dared to tread, tearing open the guts of scifi and asking what the future will do to humanity. It is raw, disturbing, and gorgeous. Ralph Fiennes gives an excellent performance far from his usual moody English protagonists-- he's a greasy scavenger, a hopeless romantic, once an LA cop but now just another bottom feeder with a fake Rolex, peddling his poison in back alleys and seedy night clubs.
Written by James Cameron, and directed by his (now ex) wife, this is one of those few films containing that rarest of animals-- the believable, complex female character. Several of them, even.
