Review of Storytelling (2001) by Andrew C — 29 Jan 2008
Not Solondz best work - I still think Happiness is the pinnacle of his achievements but it's undeniably part of his oeuvre. There aren't many directors who have such a distinctive style, such a confrontational one to boot. When a film has a student involved in a power relationship with her black tutor fucking him after breaking up with her cerebal palsey boyfriend - yup that's definately a Solondz movie.
The film is split into two parts - 'Fiction' and 'Non Fiction'. Fiction is the aforementioned tale of some high school students and their english class. Non Fiction stars Paul Giamitti as an aspiring documentary film-maker who is trying to get a film made on the college application process and a sociological study of high school life. He is failing quite badly though until things come together at the end even if it means great personal tragedy for one of the other characters.
If you're not a fan of his previous work don't bother watching Storytelling as it's not going to change your mind. If you like something challenging that will offend and surprise then give it a watch.
