Review of Storytelling (2001) by Nathan F — 15 Nov 2008
In the first movement, "Fiction," a girl's story is critiqued, and eviscerated, by a writing workshop as callow, shallow, cliche, and wan to the point of grotesquery. Solondz clearly issues the remarks self-referentially; as if to parry arguments against him by preemptively acknowledging them; but awareness is not an adequate defense; knowing your faults doesn't make them disappear, and there's nothing to suggest that the criticisms of the girl's story don't also apply here.
