Review of Storytelling (2001) by Jer M — 05 Jan 2009
I've been meaning to see this for years and finally got around to doing it. This is powerful and frightening, exploring the dehumanization that can often result from narrative form...the point of which is to CELEBRATE humanity.
Yet, still, the film is far from perfect. There are numerous moments that feel like whiny apologies to Solondz's critics and, perhaps more importantly, the movie feels incredibly incomplete. There was originally a third story that was to screen at the end of this film but, after festival screenings, it was mysteriously cut.
The missing footage cannot be found anywhere but I honestly feel like it probably added numerous-ness to the movie. Or maybe it didn't. Maybe that's why it was cut. The point is that this feels more like a collection of thematically interrelated stories than a cohesive film.
It's good, but not on the level of PALINDROMES or, my personal favorite, HAPPINESS.
