Review of Storytelling (2001) by Steven M — 15 May 2010
Most people seem to think the second section of the film is the more successful. I prefer the shorter, sharper opening story. It hits you hard, raises numerous very difficult questions and answers none leaving you shocked.
The second, longer story is a clever swipe at the American cinema industry which doesn't totally ring true. Solondz satirises the American Beauty style of naval-gazing narrative but to me it feels like he is aiming at the wrong target.
His films are a logical extension of conventional storytelling, relations to the mainstream indie he seems to dislike. He is actually a quite conventional storyteller on the evidence of the two films of his I have seen, Happiness and this.
