Review of Storytelling (2001) by Sam P — 13 Feb 2009
Solondz's cinema of cruelty is wholly admirable -there's a lovely dig at 'american beauty'- but is ultimately too self-conscious and knowing in its disengaged shock and awe. he seems to be anticipating audience reaction by proxy, and the net effect is ultimately jarring (though never boring) as he heaps on layers of meta.
