Review of Storytelling (2001) by Jon H — 19 Nov 2009
Itâ??s difficult to market short films to the public thatâ??s why most people have never even seen a short film. The makers behind Storytelling realized itâ??d be easier to release a movie of two short films rather then attempting to release them separately.
Both stories are well done and both disturbing in their own way. The two stories, â??Fictionâ?? and â??Nonfictionâ??, are tied together only by central themes such as the line between fiction and nonfiction.
â??Fictionâ?? is the story of Vi, a student who is essentially raped by her black English professor and turns it into a short story which is accused of being cliché and racist. In â??Nonfictionâ?? a teenagersâ?? drama dealing with family, high school and college is turned into a comedic documentary.
Both movies are very disturbing as they deal with social matters and taboos. The famous (and not so famous) actors in the cast all do a fabulous job (all actors seem to do there best in indie productions).
Both movies could have done just fine on their own but by putting them together you get a better dialogue between the movie and the audience. It is a fantastic, dark movie and on a side note, Selma is the best part.
