Review of Stop Making Sense (1984) by James K — 07 May 2013
'Stop Making Sense' is a visually inventive, expertly staged masterpiece that easily ranks alongside 'The Last Waltz' as one the greatest concert films ever made. As expected, Talking Heads' already visionary music is revelatory in a live setting; there is a true sense of unbridled joy throughout.
Bryne proves himself a hypnotic performer, his passionate singing and guitar playing gradually augmented with clever props, sharp lighting arrangements and now-iconic costume choices that add an element of theatricality without distracting from the most important part of the film: the music.
