Review of Stop-Loss (2008) by Mada M — 27 Nov 2009
This movie seems to have been panned left, right and centre which totally astonishes me.
I very nearly didn't pick this movie up after reading some of the reviews on this site and a few others too, I'd toyed with the idea for a few months and then after many times of adding and removing it from my purchase basket I took the plunge...I mean it was 3 English pounds which good or bad is worth a punt don't you think?
And I must say, I'm glad I took the risk as this is a very emotive movie that from the off puts you in a headlock and doesn't let you go until the end credits have rolled down the screen.
I for one fully support both the British and American troops in any combat they may face around the world, And feel they should all be looked upon as real heroes not like over paid Footballers or Celebrity types...so it sort of sadness me to see soldiers who have done great work while on active service should then be punished due to some "rule" put in place by people with more power then sense.
This movie looks at the very controversial "Stop Loss" A process of keeping army personal on the front lines against their wishes despite already having served a tour of duty.
I think the acting is first rate and the combat scenarios are very realistic.
The movie is very tense and emotional.
You feel as if your also on the run with Sgt. Brandon King and fighting the cause with him.
The movie drags you in and I personally found myself creating a emotion relationship with the characters which has not always been the case with other films of it's type and I wanted the best for all of them, for everything turn out fine...which I think is a sure sign of a powerful movie.
I was tempted to score this slightly higher but in context of what films I scored more then a four in the past I think this is a fair and true reflection of how I feel about this movie.
All I can say is, if it's priced right for a gamble take that gamble hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I have, not saying people who didn't like this movie are wrong, each to their own.
