I agree that this is a pro-soldier film, though not necessarily pro or anti war. It brings to light the conflicts soldiers face at home; conflicts we often equate to the viet nam era soldiers. I don't agree that it exaggerated the conflicts, but highlited them whtin the scope of the story.
