Review of Stolen Kisses (1968) by Ian W — 04 Mar 2009
The second film of the Antoine Doinel series, Stolen Kisses marks a stylistic departure from an art-house sensibility into more of a light romantic comedy vibe. ( a) It's in colour, and b) it's shot in the flat 1.85 aspect ratio rather than the 2.35 scope format) So yes, neither it nor the remaining sequels can be compared to "The 400 Blows", but doing so isn't exactly necessary for one's enjoyment of these sequels.
Having been discharged from the army Antoine finds imployment as, of all things, a private investigator for individuals with a particular interest in what their significant others are doing. He also starts a relationship with the young Christine, but he seems to have captured the charms of her parents more than Christine herself. Stolen Kisses is simply a lot of good-hearted, charming fun.
