Review of Stir of Echoes (1999) by Bob F — 11 Oct 2009
It is a shame Stir of Echoes was release only a month after similarly the themed Sixth Sense. We all know how much of a hit that was, and that hit steamrolled right over Stir of Echoes. In my opinion, Stir is a much better film. The same happened in 1987 with my favorite vampire film Near Dark opening two weeks after the other vampire film that summer Lost Boys (which is a favorite too, don't get me wrong).
Being a horror film, the first question into anyone's mind is the scare factor. It has it. Including a few hated "jump scares", Koepp does weave tension and intensity into the plot and Kevin Bacon's performance drives it home.
It is a shame Koepp only a has a handful of other directorial credits to his name (the last being the boring Ghost Town). He definatly knows what he is doing. He adapted the script from Richard Matheson's novel (I have not read it but Matheson is a favorite). The film's working class characters ground it relatability and I'm glad to say the supernatural doesn't go over the top too much; an issue I have with many of these types of films.
