Review of Still Crazy (1998) by Marc H — 29 Jan 2008
Yes, yes, yes, yes and YES!! Many a movie about fictional rock bands has been ultimately let down by the painfully deperate lack of good, original music. This is the exception - in fact, you'll not only want to buy the DVD but the soundtrack album as well! I suppose I could have guessed this film would be a winner for me - being a big fan of Auf Wiedersehen Pet - but its not just Oz and Barry who light up this rockfest but the whole cast share a chemistry that enables a standard Brit-flick idea to become a veritable masterpiece! Bill Nighy is superb as the angst-ridden, recovering alcoholic, quickly ageing front-man - confronted constantly with demons from his past and a growing awareness of his own mortality (in quite a few more ways than one!). Billy Connolly, as the archetypal 'seen-it-all, been-there-and-worn-out-the T-shirt' roadie is both funny and wry while accomplished musician Timothy Spall is every drummer you ever shared a tour bus with...not to mention absolutely hilarious! Jimmy Nail proves once and for all what a great voice he is blessed with....
It's just hard to pick faults...watch it - LOVE IT - then watch it lots more!
