Review of Still Crazy (1998) by Stuart M — 24 Sep 2017
Charming if never quite as funny as its premise suggests. I had expected some Spinal Tap level antics here, and while there's plenty of pointless bickering and OTT drama the film ends up taking the side of these aging rockstars rather than just ridiculing them.
Even Bill Nighy's prima dona lead vocalist gets played for pathos as well as laughs since his antics are largely a result of major insecurities that arise partly from being a replacement for their original singer and the band never letting him forget it.
While it's nice that this film's not as relentlessly cynical as it could be, the pathos does rather edge out the comedy. Ah well, c'est la vie.
