Review of Still Alice (2014) by Ioana ? — 16 Feb 2015
Julianne Moore's performance is even more remarkable when you realize that, like most movies, the scenes were likely shot out of order, which meant that Moore had to continuously readjust her characterization of Alice back and forth through the different stages of Alzheimer's. Probably most effective is Moore's ability to portray Alice's slow but inevitable regression of verbal language (more noteworthy given that Alice is a linguistics professor), as well as Alice's increased utilization of technology in an attempt hang on to what she's bound to lose .
The supporting cast unsurprisingly take a huge back seat to let Moore shine, and the gentle approach in the direction throughout avoids any trappings of excessive melodrama (into which such a film could have easily fallen).
