Review of Still Alice (2014) by Diane M — 16 Feb 2015
Driven solely by the character of Alice, there is nothing really remarkable about this film aside from the performance of Julianne Moore. There is a very impressive script written here, aside from a few questionable moments, but the plain camerawork and "television" feel the film has throughout, makes it a weird viewing experience to those were hoping for this story to be told in a "Hollywood" way.
Does that hurt the film's story? No, but may make your mind meander throughout it's 102-minute running time. It's themes really does make you feel for these characters' emotions, and you will probably have a few tears trickling down your face, but what bothered me were the off-putting technical aspects.
Overall, it is a very powerful and moving character study that is extremely well-acted and well-written. Those are two of the necessities in a great film, so I will give it a lot of credit for that, but there are a few undeniable set-backs, including an extremely abrupt ending.
In the end, not having read the novel that this film is based upon, "Still Alice" is a moving picture that I highly recommend.
