Review of Still Alice (2014) by Art S — 24 Oct 2015
Julianne Moore has early onset Alzheimer's Disease (at age 50!) and it's brutal. She was a linguistics professor at Columbia and then everything declines. Of course, it is poignant. Moore and Alec Baldwin turn in solid performances, and the first third of the movie is replete with "real" -seeming experiences.
But of course, as Moore begins to fall apart, the script enters "movie of the week" territory. There may not be much that you can do with a character that can no longer express herself. Kristen Stewart, the youngest adult child, tries hard to be authentic with her mom but it's tough.
She's the only one keeping the movie alive by the end. Soon, the sad string music is everywhere and your heart can't help but be tugged. I have nothing left to say.
